History of Polaris® ATVs

The company began in 1945 when they built one of the first successful snowmobiles using scrap metal. Over the years, they added a range of products and expanded into other powersports markets. In 1985, they unleashed the first Polaris® ATV: the Trail Boss. Many refer to this model as the first American-made ATV.

At the time, ATVs, in general, were difficult to ride. They were clunky and hard to control, much different than today's models. Polaris® focused on tackling this challenge head-on. Their priority on innovation led to many breakthroughs that are now industry standards, such as independent rear suspension, four-wheel drive, automatic transmission, full floorboards, and large-bore, four-stroke engines. These improvements made Polaris® ATVs easy to handle and a thrill to ride. People everywhere wanted to get their hands on a Polaris® ATV and by 2008, the company sold its one millionth Sportsman® ATV.
